Pain, Injury & Neurological Conditions

What conditions do you treat with acupuncture?

At our Freehold, NJ clinic, we treat chronic back pain, sciatica, neck and shoulder tension, TMJ and migraines, neuropathy, and Bell’s Palsy, along with fertility and IVF support, stress, anxiety, sleep issues, and cortisol balance. Treatment plans are personalized based on your specific condition and health goals.

Yes — acupuncture for Bell’s Palsy is one of our most requested treatments at our Freehold, NJ clinic. Treatment focuses on stimulating facial nerve function, improving circulation to affected muscles, and supporting the body’s natural recovery process. Many patients begin treatment within the first few weeks of onset, when timing can meaningfully impact recovery, though we treat Bell’s Palsy at any stage. Contact us to discuss your specific case and timeline.

Yes — acupuncture is one of the most effective drug-free treatments for chronic back pain and sciatica. It works by reducing inflammation, releasing nerve compression, and relaxing the muscles that contribute to pain, whether it stems from disc issues, muscle strain, or nerve irritation. Most patients notice improved mobility and reduced pain within the first few sessions, with a personalized treatment plan built around your specific diagnosis.

Yes — neck pain and tension are among the most common conditions we see, whether from poor posture, stress, screen time, or muscle strain. Acupuncture releases tight muscles, improves blood flow to the area, and calms the nervous system response that often keeps tension locked in place. We frequently combine acupuncture with cupping therapy for neck tension specifically, which helps release deeper muscle knots that needles alone may not fully address.

Yes — TMJ disorders, jaw tension, and migraines respond well to acupuncture, and it’s one of the more requested treatments we offer here in Freehold. For TMJ and jaw pain, treatment targets the muscles around the jaw and temples to release tension and reduce clenching or grinding patterns. For migraines and tension headaches, acupuncture works by releasing trigger points, improving blood flow, and calming the nervous system activity that often triggers headache onset. Many patients see a noticeable reduction in migraine frequency, not just intensity, after a course of treatment.

Yes — peripheral neuropathy, including numbness, tingling, and burning sensations in the hands and feet, is one of the conditions we treat most consistently, often for patients managing diabetic neuropathy. Acupuncture works by improving circulation and nerve signaling to the affected areas, which can reduce discomfort and support nerve function over time. We frequently see patients who’ve tried other options without relief find real improvement here, particularly those managing this alongside other chronic conditions.

Yes — knee pain, tendon injuries, and sports-related conditions like IT band syndrome and Achilles tendon strain are treatments we see strong results with. Acupuncture reduces inflammation and swelling around the joint, improves blood flow to speed tissue healing, and helps release the surrounding muscle tension that often contributes to knee pain. We frequently pair acupuncture with electro-acupuncture or cupping for sports injuries specifically, which can accelerate recovery time for athletes and active patients looking to get back to training.

The number of sessions depends on the condition being treated and how long you’ve had it. Acute issues, like a recent muscle strain, often improve within 3-6 sessions, while chronic conditions such as long-standing back pain, neuropathy, or Bell’s Palsy typically respond best to a longer course of weekly treatment. Most new patients start with a package designed around their specific condition, and we reassess progress along the way to adjust the plan as needed.

Yes — when performed by a licensed acupuncturist using sterile, single-use needles, acupuncture is considered extremely safe with minimal side effects. Dr. Yuliya Chernyak holds a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) and follows strict sterile-needle protocols for every patient. Most people experience little to no discomfort during treatment, and any mild soreness or bruising at needle sites typically resolves within a day or two. The National Institutes of Health has reviewed the evidence on acupuncture’s safety and effectiveness across a range of conditions, including chronic pain.

Fertility & IVF

Do you offer fertility acupuncture?

Yes — fertility acupuncture is one of the services we focus on most, supporting both natural conception and patients undergoing IVF. Treatment is built around improving blood flow to the reproductive organs, balancing reproductive hormones, and regulating the menstrual cycle, while also addressing the stress response that can interfere with conception. We work with patients trying to conceive naturally as well as those coordinating care alongside a fertility clinic, and we can adjust the treatment plan based on where you are in that process.

Yes — we provide acupuncture specifically timed around IVF protocols, most commonly before and after embryo transfer, which is when many patients and fertility clinics find it most valuable. Treatment focuses on improving blood flow to the uterine lining, reducing stress hormones that can affect implantation, and supporting overall hormonal balance throughout your cycle. We coordinate around your fertility clinic’s timeline and protocols rather than working separately from them, so treatment fits into your existing IVF schedule instead of adding complexity to it.

Yes — acupuncture works on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, the communication system between your brain and reproductive organs that governs hormone production. This can help regulate irregular or absent periods, support conditions like PCOS, ease perimenopause symptoms, and improve the hormonal balance needed for conception, not just during an active fertility treatment cycle. Because hormone regulation is a gradual process, most patients need consistent weekly treatment over 2-3 months to see meaningful changes in cycle regularity.

Frequency depends on where you are in your protocol. During the stimulation phase, weekly sessions are typical to support egg quality and reduce treatment-related stress. Around embryo transfer, we schedule a session shortly before and shortly after the procedure — the timing most commonly used in fertility acupuncture. After a positive result, many patients continue with acupuncture through the early weeks to support the pregnancy, following established protocols including Debra Betts’ obstetric acupuncture guidelines. We’ll map out the exact schedule with you once we know your clinic’s protocol dates.

Stress, Anxiety & Sleep

Does acupuncture help with stress or anxiety?

Yes — acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the body’s natural “rest and recover” response, which lowers cortisol and other stress hormones and shifts you out of the fight-or-flight state anxiety keeps you stuck in. Many patients notice calmer, clearer thinking and better sleep after just a few sessions, with more lasting improvement in anxiety symptoms building over a consistent course of treatment. It’s often most effective alongside — not instead of — any therapy or medication you’re already using.

Yes — acupuncture can help with both falling asleep and staying asleep by calming the nervous system’s overactivity at night and supporting the body’s natural melatonin and circadian rhythm regulation. It’s particularly effective for stress-related insomnia, where racing thoughts or a wired-but-tired feeling keep you awake, since treatment addresses the underlying nervous system state rather than just sedating you. Many patients report falling asleep faster and waking less during the night within the first few weeks of consistent treatment.

Nervous system regulation therapy refers to treatments that help shift the body out of a chronic stress state and back into balance, rather than just managing individual symptoms one at a time. Acupuncture is one of the most well-researched forms of this kind of therapy — by stimulating specific points, it influences how your nervous system responds to stress, which is why it can improve anxiety, sleep, and physical tension all at once, since they often share the same underlying cause. Instead of treating each symptom separately, treatment addresses the root imbalance driving all of them.

Your first session includes a full discussion of your stress triggers, sleep patterns, and any physical tension you’re carrying, so treatment can be tailored to how stress actually shows up in your body — not just addressed generically. During treatment, most patients describe a deep sense of relaxation, and it’s common to feel drowsy or even fall asleep during the session itself. We typically recommend weekly visits at the start, tapering as your nervous system stabilizes, and many Freehold-area patients build this into an ongoing part of their routine rather than a short-term fix.

Weight Management & Cortisol

Can acupuncture help with weight loss?

We don’t offer acupuncture as a dedicated weight-loss program, so if you’re looking for a structured weight-loss protocol, this isn’t that. What acupuncture can do is address one piece of the picture: chronically elevated cortisol contributes to stubborn belly fat and disrupted metabolism for many people, and acupuncture is effective at lowering cortisol and calming the stress response that drives it. For patients whose weight struggles are tied to stress and cortisol specifically, this can be a genuinely helpful piece of a broader approach — just not a standalone solution.

Cortisol is your body’s primary stress hormone, and when it stays chronically elevated, it signals your body to store fat preferentially around the abdomen while also disrupting sleep and appetite regulation — which compounds the problem further. Acupuncture works by calming the stress response at its source, specifically activating the parasympathetic nervous system to bring cortisol levels back down, rather than targeting fat directly. Over consistent treatment, many patients notice reduced bloating and easing of that “stress belly” feeling, alongside the broader anxiety and sleep improvements acupuncture supports.

Auricular acupuncture targets specific points on the ear that correspond to different systems throughout the body, including the nervous system pathways involved in stress regulation. It’s a needle-light, well-tolerated treatment that’s often used alongside body acupuncture to reinforce cortisol reduction and support the nervous system’s ability to reset. On its own, it’s not a treatment for weight loss — but as part of a broader plan addressing stress and cortisol, it’s one more tool that can help.

Advanced Allergy Therapeutics (AAT)

The information provided on this site is for general educational purposes only and is not intended as medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Advanced Allergy Therapeutics resolves the symptoms associated with allergies and sensitivities. Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Please consult with a qualified healthcare provider regarding any health condition
What is Advanced Allergy Therapeutics (AAT)?

Advanced Allergy Therapeutics (AAT) is a proprietary, software-guided technology that combines a comprehensive stress assessment with item-specific digital signals and gentle acupressure stimulation along the spine to resolve the symptoms associated with allergies and sensitivities. Rather than diagnosing an allergy, AAT identifies items causing stress on the body’s organ systems and works to correct the body’s response to them. AAT complements your existing medical care and doesn’t replace guidance from your doctor or allergist.

Yes — AAT uses gentle acupressure stimulation along the spine paired with item-specific digital signals, not needles. Most patients find the process comfortable and relaxing, and it’s a good option for those who want the benefits of a targeted approach without needles being involved at all.

AAT addresses the symptoms associated with a wide range of sensitivities, including food sensitivities, seasonal and environmental allergens, and other stress-related reactions. AAT does not address any item that has caused or may cause an anaphylactic reaction — for those specific items, you’ll want to continue avoidance, work with your allergist, and keep your EpiPen on hand. AAT can, however, support the symptoms associated with your other sensitivities and allergies, alongside the care you’re already receiving.

The number of sessions depends on how many items are contributing to your symptoms and how your body responds to treatment. Many patients begin noticing symptom improvement within the first several sessions, with a fuller course of treatment recommended to address the full range of items involved. We’ll outline a personalized plan after your initial stress assessment, based on what we identify.

Appointments & Policies

Do you offer same-day acupuncture appointments?

Same-day appointments may be available for private-pay patients, depending on that day’s schedule. If you have insurance benefits we’re verifying or billing directly, same-day booking typically isn’t available since coverage needs to be confirmed first — but call the office and we’ll always check what’s open.

Your first visit runs about 90 minutes and starts with a detailed discussion of your health history, current symptoms, and treatment goals, so we can build a plan around what’s actually going on rather than a generic protocol. From there, you’ll receive your first acupuncture treatment the same visit, tailored to what we uncover during intake. You’ll leave with a clear, personalized plan for the sessions ahead — right here in Freehold, NJ.

We ask for as much notice as possible if you need to reschedule. Same-day cancellations and no-shows are treated as a used session: package patients have one session deducted, and single-session patients are charged a cancellation fee. We enforce this consistently to keep appointment slots available for other patients who need care.
